Internal Medicine Specialty

Aims of the Scientific Council of the Internal Medicine

 

To improve the quality of medical services in this field and by setting standards to make sure that the physician specialist internists had obtained much information and clinical skills in order to provide better medical care for his patients, and to be able to exercise self-learning later.

And supervised by the Scientific Council of Internal Medicine to train doctors in this specialty in the hospitals that have been recognized as centers of training, and shall Commission decisions and descriptions, training and public recognition of the development conditions relating to acceptance of the doctors and the foundations of training, duration and the specifications and conditions to be met in hospitals and centers of practical training. While the Committee is responsible for examinations rules and conduct of examinations and development.

The certification means the Scientific Council of  Internal Medicine that the holder of this certificate has optained the required training period and has been successful in the examinations prescribed by the Board. The symbol of this certificate to the excellence and superiority . Holder will be expected to provide the best medical care in medicine, internal medicine

Years of Training

The training program starts from the first year. The trainee is graded according to the foundations of grading:

1- The first year:

The trainee spends 8 months in the section of General Internal Medicine, and 4 months in subspecialty section. The trainee must do the followings:

- Know the theoretical basics of Internal Medicine.

- Know the theoretical basics of science related to Internal Medicine.

- Deepen in pathological profile, and make in details a clinical examination to every system in the body.

- Participate in scientific sessions.  

- Write the report of discharging patients from the hospital, he must be responsible for its contents.  

 

2- The second year:

The trainee must spend 6 months in the section of General Internal Medicine, and spend 6 months in subspecialty section , outpatient clinics and in Emergency Section. In this year the followings are considered:

- The trainee must expand in theoretical information of Internal Medicine, and apply this information in clinical daily practice.

- Continuous development of clinical skills.

- Deepen the understanding and explanation of diagnostic skills like x-rays, pathologic slides and all other diagnostic methods.

- Follow up the periodic Medical publications, summarize them and participate effectively in presenting them.

- participate with the first year resident student in taking care of patients and taking responsibility for this.

- Participate in taking responsibility for good care of patients in emergency and outpatient clinics.

- Write the report of hospital discharge, and must be responsible for its contents.

      3- The Third Year:

The trainee spends 4 months in General Internal Medicine and 8 months in subspecialty sections. This section is optional and the chairman of the department must approve. The followings are considered:  

- The trainee should take the responsibility for patients good care.

- Participate in the development of clinical and diagnostic skills for first and second year residents.

- Participate in consultations related to specialized Internal Medicine under the consultant supervision.

- Participate in consultations in the hospital departments under a consultant supervision.

- Offer a good help to the first and second year residents when they are in their shifts.

- Participate in all scientific activities in the section.

- Total understanding of the different diagnostic methods,  capability of performance. Training the first and second year residents to be able to do the followings such as Arthrocentesis, Lumbar Puncture, side and liquid Puncture, Liver Biopsy, Sternal Biopsy, Peritoneal and Pleural Biopsy, etc…, in addition to that he must read and explain cardiac diagraph and echo-diagraph, MRI and others.

      4- The Fourth Year:

 the trainee can spend this year in one of precised branches, his duties are to:

- Supervise the work of residents in all Internal Medicine sections during their shifts and prepare lists of theses shifts to acknowledge the chairman of this department in order to get his approval.

- Supervise the work of residents in his unit and take responsibilities for shortcomings and mistakes done in taking pathological history. Make clinical examination and procedures to help patients during his daily visits.

- Continuo scientific and clinical development whether in subspecialty or in General Internal Medicine.

- Guide the first year residents in taking care of patients and gain skills.

- Must be a role model for the beginners- residents in commitment to attendance and be responsible for hygiene and all other management matters.

- Prepare the weekly grand clinical sessions and coordinate with other residents in his unit to deal with cases which was presented and supervise the level of this preparation in all its aspects.

- Participate in preparing the training program, and in the continuous development of the department.

- Participate in scientific research which is done in the department according to his desire, this must not affect his other duties, in order to give this participation much more understanding in Internal Medicine, and proficiency of searching for specific scientific subjects also searching for resources of different scientific information.

- Do consultation in Internal Medicine in other departments of the hospital during his shifts and must determine the therapy in coordination with a specialist or a consultant during their shifts.

- Participate in the work of outpatient clinics under the supervision from a specialist or a consultant.    

- Supervise the resident's work in Internal Emergency during his shift.     

- Supervise patient medical history records which is written by the residents during their daily observation to the development of patient clinical case, all recent patient progresses, daily clinical and laboratory examination outcomes. Must put their explanations and inform the specialist or the counselor.

- Must write the abstract of the medical observation for the pathological intractable problems of cases which have a long stay at hospital in rate one time each five to seven days.

- Must sign the death certificate. Must be responsible for all its contents.

- Must sign the paper of patient discharge. Must be responsible for all its contents. Must present this to the specialist or to the counselor and must not put this in the patient file unless he gets an approval from the specialist or from the counselor responsible for this patient.

- Must sign reports of pathological cases of communicable diseases in which the low allows to make such reports, he must be responsible for all its contents and must deliver it to the concerned authorities.

- Must check the patients file before sending it to the medical record, he must be responsible for all its contents and must complete all deficiencies. And work to make the patients file accepted by the concerned authorities of the central medical record in the hospital.

The conditions to register in training program includes:
Fair knowledge of Arabic language.
Possession of bachelor's degree in Medicine.
Registering in the Ministry of Health or one of its affiliates in one of the Arab countries and the right to practice the profession in the country in which he will work.
Complete a period of one year of rotating internship before or after graduation.
Fill out the registration form prepared by the Scientific Council.
Pay the registration fees.
Submit the application to the training center.
Applicants are selected according to the conditions of the Local Councils.
Any additional conditions for admission in one of the Arab countries.

The examinations of the Arab Board of Health Specializations consists of two parts: 
A First part  written exam given after one year of training.
A final written exam, in addition to an oral and a clinical exam after concluding the training period and passing the first part exam.
The application of exam must be approved  by the supervisor of the training and by the chairman of the department concerned.
The examination committee is responsible for preparation of  exams, correcting and adopting the results of the examination.
